Jan Steen (1626-1679) was a Dutch painter known for his lively and humorous scenes of daily life, often with a moralizing message. He was born in Leiden, Netherlands, and was the son of a brewer. Although he received a degree in theology, he decided to pursue art and became a student of the Dutch painter Nicolaes Knüpfer.
Steen's paintings often depict chaotic and humorous scenes of everyday life, such as taverns, households, and feasts. His works are filled with details and often have a moral lesson or satirical message. He also painted historical and biblical scenes, but it is his genre paintings that he is most famous for.
Steen was a prolific artist and produced a large number of works throughout his career. He was highly regarded by his contemporaries and his work influenced other Dutch painters of the time, such as Johannes Vermeer. Steen's paintings are characterized by his use of color and light, as well as his skill in portraying human expression and emotion.
In addition to his work as a painter, Steen also ran a brewery for a time and was involved in the management of a theater. He died in Leiden in 1679 and is buried in the Pieterskerk. Today, his paintings are held in collections all over the world, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
