Laura Petrovich-Cheney: Wood Quilts!

Image
Today, because it is Kiki's last weekday until a holiday, we looked at a stunning array of wooden quilts and sculptures by Laura Petrovich-Cheney. Jaw dropping! She's been quilting since she was 17 and after Hurricane Sandy devastated her community and caused a death in her family, she began reclaiming wood and forming sculptural quilts.  Top of the Day .... (there were so many!) .... is this moving image of homes she created from pieces of broken homes. It's called Homesick & while there were so many incredible pieces with abstract or cleanly geometric shapes & a wide array of colors, this one encapsulates a lot of her mission ... reclaiming destroyed objects then repurposing them to elicit hope.  Laura Petrovich-Cheney's website .... check out all the wonderful links at the top of the page; the arrows to the right of each piece of work cycles you through her artistry. -- link --   From her website 2017-present quilts -- link --  Pencil quilt made in collabor

Anya Gallacio! Stunning!

Image
We followed up the majestic intricate pieces of Ursula von Rydingsvard with the equally mesmerizing oeuvre of Anya Gallacio -- this time we found it by accident when we were looking at a park full of statues in Austin, Texas.  Here's the first image we saw, a stump you can actually sit on ... "to see if time was there," 2017 -- link --Simple perhaps, but it intrigued us and we found a treasure trove of sumptuous pieces. Top of the Day of any number of stellar achievements is this "Preserve 'Beauty'' (1991-2003) from the Tate but she replicates it or created other versions including a big red carpet of roses in various other galleries.  Anya Gallacio at The Tate Gallery -- link --  More of her work at Blum & Poe ... some of them delicate pieces, some monumental -- link --  Anya at her home gallery -- link --  More of her works via the Thomas Dane Gallery -- link --  From YouTube: The rose carpet mentioned above then The Light Pours Out of Me, a su

Ursula von Rydingsvard! Kismet!

Image
A wonderful day of surprises .... we were visiting the National Museums of Women in the Arts & Luba saw an odd item. We didn't know if it was a sculpture, part of a quilt: but when we looked at it -- it was so wonderfully strange, we looked up the artist & stumbled upon Ursula von Rydingsvard!  And if you think that was random -- Kiki piped up to ask, "Did you all see that I sent info about her to our group yesterday?!" I had missed it for sure. Talk about serendipity! How crazy miraculous is that!! We all agreed it was kismet at work!  The Top of the Day is every single image we encountered!!! But here's just one we all loved.  Scientia, 2016. We saw this on her website, but it's installed at MIT's List Visual Art Center Here is the first image we saw, this strange Apron, from 1997 made out of cedar, stain, and graphite -- link -- Two sculptures she did for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one primarily bronze & the other out of glass -- link --
