Issey Miyake plus Mannerist Art

Image
We celebrated the work of Issey Miyake who passed away this month. Then we looked at some Mannerist art, which coincidentally to our last few meetings, closely followed the Rennaisance era!  (Issey work to follow - still adding to this)  We have two Top of the Day(s) .... Issey Miyake with one of his sculptural creations.  He passed away on August 5th, 2022. Revisiting Albrecht Dürer!

Image
Jerry suggested Renaissance since we haven't explored the genre in a long time. There were a LOT of groans because, as some explained, when we explored Renaissance art in a previous group, so much of it was heavily religious.  We decided to examine that period's art but to focus on nature, science, and other kinds of work without religious trappings. Everyone welcomed this as a breath of fresh air.  Our Top of the Day is The Large Piece of Turf known in the Wikipedia article (here) as Great Piece of Turf, 1503 -- link --  A short video we watched about this wonderful piece  from the Khan Academy -- link --  Death and the Soldier, n.d. but the woodcut has 1510 at the top -- link --  Melancolia I, 1514 -- link --  Knight, Death, and the Devil, 1513 -- link --  Hase, 1502 -- link --  The Rhinoceros, 1515 -- link --  Here is the image & a wikipedia article about D ü rer's very odd Head of a Walrus, 1521 -- link --  An actual walrus head -- link --
