All of these bird are endangered so the Audobon asked various artists to celebrate them & bring awareness to their plight. Each bird image features the reimagining as well as Audobon's drawings of it & occasionally a sound file so you can head our feathery friend as well! We looked at a few of the artists in more depth, but will save many of them for their own day.
First we looked at the Puffin -- link -- WOW!! We are going to be looking at the work of Angela Haseltine Pozzi more in the future for certain; here is a link to her nonprofit that turns ocean detritus into art and brings awareness to the need for ocean cleaning & conservation -- link --
Jerry was instantly drawn to the Cedar Waxwing with his dapper duds -- link -- and so we followed the path to artist Ryan Berkley's instagram with more whimsical illustrations -- link --
We looked at the Purple Gallinule rendered by Olimpia Zagnoli -- link -- and here's her wonderful wild design and installation work -- link --
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird -- link -- led us to the wonderful work of Gaby D'alessandro. Here's her website -- link --
We had this unexpected view of the California Quail by Marc Burckhardt, beautifully rendered if you compare it to the Audobon version but amidst modern territory encroachment -- link --
Peer into the ocular orbs of hundreds of birds at once with this celebration of the Audobon -- link -- Run your cursor over most of the eyes & it links to information about each of the birds whose eyes are illustrated so deftly & inventively by Jenny Kendler.
The Great Egret was almost extinct because its feathers were used in hat making, but thanks to great conservation & a great deal of cajoling of the hat industry, it was spared. Olaf Hajek celebrates the save -- link --
Beautiful illustrations Lauren Tamaki created of the Black-billed Magpie -- link --
