Ruth's Icelandic Art & Architecture Photos

Photos of Hallgrímskirkja -- the largest church in Iceland. Ruth gets different angles here.

Ruth got great pics of the natural basalt formations that formed the inspiration for the design of the church.

Interior of the church with the big pipe organ.

Check out the entry in Wikipedia about the church, its history & criticisms (can you imagine???) Very detailed write-up about the pipe organ as well.

Ruth found out the Burden of History sculpture was done by Magnus Tomasson -- you will see one of his famous sculptures on Friday's blog as well.

Elves!!!

Ruth photographed this witchy sculpture complete with cauldron outside of several homes. The animal skins form the body of this tall sorceress!

Architecture & art collide

Graffiti -- perhaps by sound engineers?

Wonderfully graffitied building in a small town in Iceland.

LGBTQ representation in this tiny town welcomes everyone.

HugList!

A tall rider.

The Brakin Monument in Borgarnes by Bjarni Þór Bjarnason from 1997 in memory of Þorgerður Brák who perished saving a young child.

Turf Houses

Church with turf sides & the original material of the building left showing under the new siding.

Locks!

Woodwork -- as Ruth or Terry said -- the winters were LONG in Iceland! They had a lot of time for intricate designs.

Ruth found info on the Mosaic she photographed in Skaholt Cathedral
It was by Nina Tryggvadottir, exiled from US for being a communist sympathizer in 1949.  Mainly did abstracts.  This was for the new church building in 1963. More on Nina Tryggvadóttir here:
