Recommendations from the Gang!

Enjoyable day sharing pics recommended by our team! We looked at two more paintings from Luba's friend James F. Jereb. Luba said, "He's relieved to have moved out of his pointillist period and on to other things!" It's understandable since we were all gobsmacked at how he could have made so many perfectly shaped points / dots / dibs of pigment. Infinity 1, a black and white painting with gray & perhaps lavender, was marvel enough but Holy Grail, with it's colorful array of dots & constellations took our Top of the Day.

Kiki gave us the Sedlec Ossuary, the Church of Bones! The exterior looks like a nondescript house of worship, but inside -- human bones & skulls adorn the walls, ceiling, altar, even the chandeliers! The church & its cemetery were founded in the early 1200s. Katje told a story that when an Abbot of the church brought back "holy soil" from Jerusalem, it became the "hip" site for Bohemians to bury their dead!

Once the Plague of 1318 and the Hussite Wars (1419-34) occurred, there were quite a few bones. A blind monk is said to have first arranged them into pyramids; then in 1870, the bones were fashioned into the features Sedlec Ossuary is famous for today. The bones of between 40,000 to 70,000 people reside in and around the church!

Beth & Jerry visited the futuristic Arcosanti in central Arizona. Beth decried it had the WORST vegan brownie on Earth! Jerry said they used that ground brownie to paint the walls around the Arco-logical site! Kidding aside, this odd experimental town was proposed by Paolo Soleri, an Italian-American architect. His philosophy of Arcology (architecture meets ecology) is at the core of this development. They also make very well known bells that are sold all over the world.

Beth & Jerry also recommended BioSphere 2 to us. This unique experiment began as a closed system in which group of humans, some of them scientists, would live to see if it could be a completely separate self-sustainable environment. The first attempt didn't work out exactly as planned, as we discussed, but the distinctive system of buildings has become a treasure trove of scientific discovery & a big tourist attraction for Oracle Arizona. There's a documentary on Hulu called Spaceship Earth; the trailer is free to watch on Youtube (link below) and there's a short doc from YouTube as well.
