Monday Madness!
Our Google Arts & Culture show started with Suiko a Japanese graffiti artist's big Scorpion mural from the Pera Museum in Istanbul. The vibrant color and mechanical look to the 32-foot arachnid reminded one of our gang of Friday's Top of the Day - the mechanical cows of Miina Äkkijyrkkä (check out the blog entry before this.)
Michael's Barrett's Aviero was up next; watercolor & China ink (same as Indian Ink, which originated in China) houses with what looks like graying soot. Some people saw criticism of the Industrial Age while others took hope from the clean side of the central building, the colors in the painting, as well as the sun peeking out at the top. NOTE: Found a link to a style of houses from the Aviero neighborhood in Portugal which look very similar to these houses.
Malach by Jerome Kaplan -- a bright bold lithograph made us gasp. Kaplan's fearless use of color and the piercing look from his heroine made great sense when one of our own told us that, "malach" means Angel or messenger. A few of us saw the wings on either side of emissary Malach once that was pointed out.
Gejza Kiselbach's On Pasture gave us a calm soothing feel. Bucolic setting, rich colors with lots of highlights -- mauves, lime greens, purples amidst the more traditional colors one might imagine in a pasture -- relaxed our eyes & minds. Lots of discussion about the cloud movement & various lines in the painting followed. One of the cows took an interest in us and started walking forward .... that's when Greg starting backing up!
Our Top of the Day and final painting of the day is Dennis Miller Bunker's In the Greenhouse from 1888. Impressionistic style with spirited flowers won out over all the other art pieces in this eclectic exciting show. The link to Bunker's more realistic version of this painting is in the blog as well. Several of us prefer the more abstract of the two. The realistic has its place, but the nonrepresentational leaves much more to our imaginations.
Tomorrow begins our Gaudi Day!
