Freaky Friday!

Today we shared a lighthearted day of artwork starting with the Mushroom House in Perinton, New York. Created by a group of designers (as one of our gang discovered!), this fantastically mushroom-shaped home was first started by architect James H. Johnson. He patterned the house after a stem of Queen Anne's Lace, which is not a mushroom but has stalks under the helm similar to some mushrooms. The rich mahogany wood shelving, tables, the mosaic walls, fireplace & accents make this a visual treat! You can rent this weird wonderful spot. ONLY $5,500 a month -- one of our own reported! Practically FREE!

After Svetlana Petrova suffered a loss in her family, she turned sorrow into silliness and became an art sensation. She wove her cat Zarathustra into great classical & modern works culminating in calendars, mugs, t-shirts, and (to my personal astonishment) a museum exhibition at the Barn at Stonehill in Oxfordshire. Over 75,000 people attended! People clearly NEED a little whimsy & joviality - or perhaps a big fat cat in their lives.

Award-winning Finnish sculptor Miina Äkkijyrkkä is known for her cattle-themed works. She uses discarded cars & car parts to create these larger- than-life car cows adding lightness & color to otherwise drab spots -- particularly in Finland's looooong winters. Some of us saw deer, goats, lambs -- whatever your take is -- sculptor, welder, painter, Miina Äkkijyrkkä is a real delight.

Per transforming old cars as art, one of our folks suggested we take a look at the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. And the hubby of another member said she had actually been there & tagged one of the cars (which is encouraged.) Fun interactive art! (We hope they pick up all those spray cans!!!)

Oliver Voss's The Bather is a floating sculpture on a lake on Binnenalster Lake in Hamburg. I erroneously called it The Mermaid because that's what many locals call it -- but it's technically The Bather. Makes a little more sense but it was still jarring .... and .... we will leave it in Hamburg!! Hahha!

Finally we looked at Claes Oldenburg's Spoonbridge and Cherry outside the Walker Center in Minneapolis. I've been to see this jubilant sight in the center of the park. We wondered if we could walk on the bridge of the spoon but it looks like a slippery slope!

See you for Monday Madness our "Jerry inspired" Google Art Day!
