FASHION STATEMENTS!

Today we did something different: instead of giving out artwork piece by piece, we held a survey of various costumes, street fashion, high & cultural fashion. We started with a website that showed the fashion / clothing photography of Iranian-born Haleh Anvari. Her work Chadornama or Chador-Dadar takes the black cloth of the traditional Chador (the large piece of cloth worn by Muslim women) and replaces it with bright, colorful, flowery billowy fabric that would never be worn in more orthodox countries. A political statement: celebration of women who might otherwise be hidden from view.

One of our group wanted us to look at the fashion of the Burning Man events; she even had photos from an exhibit of the mega-festival. It was so fun to examine the headdresses, capes, and outfits from regal to steampunk, fairy tale to futuristic. The creativity of the Burning Man partygoers is fascinating and unlimited. We followed that with a look at the shoe designs of Filipino fashionista Kermit Tesoro. His Octopus Shoe and other Venus-flytrap-like designs, for one, engendered awe as well as consternation!

A review of the costumes of the Miss Universe Pageant of 2019 is our Top of the Day! So enjoyable to see the variety of designs from the various countries in the contest and from around the globe. The pageantry, beauty, kitsch, humor & grace with which so many of these designers created their country’s iconic clothing were delightful, enlightening & comic! The pics are notated with the wearer of the costume – I’ll go in & add the designers (the ones I’ve found) in the comments under the photos.

  Top of the Day is the Alexander McQueen & Damian Hirst Scarves collaboration, butterflies & skulls. Alexander was an avant-garde fashion designer & Damian an artist who pushes the boundary of what art can be. This collaboration is such a delicate beauty & so surprising if you know they work. Please check out the YouTube video below that shows the movement of the fabric on actual people! We saw Yves St. Laurent's tribute to Piet Mondrian's colorful forms & artwork from 1965. Mondrian's original painting and the inspiration for the dress is Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Grey and Blue from 1921 and is included in the links. Mondrian painted so many similar works, but this is the one that Yves St. Laurent said he used primarily.  Next we forayed into another Guerra de la Paz piece called Oasis. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

 We started today with Lorenzo Quinn’s, The Force of Nature sculpture – a series of sculptures he’s placed all over the globe. There are versions in NYC, Monaco, Singapore, Shanghai, Ireland, and other locales. It’s composed of various materials (bronze, steel, aluminum) and the Mother Nature figures are sometimes nude or can be attired in big billowing robes. She seems to be holding on to the Earth so it doesn’t get out of her control. We also looked at Lorenzo’s website to see him working on other sculpts. Son of Anthony Quinn – he definitely inherited his father’s artistic talent. The website is in this blog. As part of our New Year’s Celebration, we looked at M. C. Escher Fireworks lithograph from 1933. The famed Dutch graphic artist made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. Believe it or not, Escher was not incredibly popular during his life until very late. What a treasure he is. A master of form, shape, visual adventure, Escher has inspired artists ...

​We viewed more works from the Harlem Renaissance today -- with little leaps into individual artists' work. The Top of the Day is this astounding mural by Charles Alston from 1949 called Exploration and Colornization.
