CLOTHING AS ART -- deux!

French designer Béatrice Coron cuts paper & Tyrek, among other materials, into breathtaking dresses, capes, and suits – sometimes with text as in our Top of the Day entitled Fashion Statement. Other times she cuts out elaborate patterns, forms of animals, and dancing characters embedded in her unique “fabric.” See more of her work at the link below! [Didn’t realize she collaborated with pattern maker Elizabeth DeSole on this “little black dress." so I'm adding this note!]

Italian clothing & footwear designer Elsa Schiaparelli & Salvador Dalí collaborated on the Shoe Hat to “turn fashion on its head!” They collaborated on a number of projects; the shoe hat being one of their most famous. It’s appeared in film, with Katherine Helmond in Brazil as an example during today’s show, as well as print, even referenced on television, since its inception in the late ‘30s.

One of our group suggested we show the work of Guo Pei, the designer recognized most for music superstar, Rihanna’s golden down from the 2015 Met Gala, Guo Pei said her gown, which she calls Magnificent Gold, took 50,000 hours to make. We looked at other work of the Chinese couturier & tomorrow get to see our group member’s own photos from an exhibit of Pei’s work.

We viewed many examples of the artists above and the conversation, as always, was lively & vibrant! Tomorrow is going to be funnnnnnnnn!

  Top of the Day is the Alexander McQueen & Damian Hirst Scarves collaboration, butterflies & skulls. Alexander was an avant-garde fashion designer & Damian an artist who pushes the boundary of what art can be. This collaboration is such a delicate beauty & so surprising if you know they work. Please check out the YouTube video below that shows the movement of the fabric on actual people! We saw Yves St. Laurent's tribute to Piet Mondrian's colorful forms & artwork from 1965. Mondrian's original painting and the inspiration for the dress is Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Grey and Blue from 1921 and is included in the links. Mondrian painted so many similar works, but this is the one that Yves St. Laurent said he used primarily.  Next we forayed into another Guerra de la Paz piece called Oasis. They created an Eden in found clothing. Whether you saw socks, large scarves or Star Trek tribbles as one of our group mused -- to many a chuckle...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

 We started today with Lorenzo Quinn’s, The Force of Nature sculpture – a series of sculptures he’s placed all over the globe. There are versions in NYC, Monaco, Singapore, Shanghai, Ireland, and other locales. It’s composed of various materials (bronze, steel, aluminum) and the Mother Nature figures are sometimes nude or can be attired in big billowing robes. She seems to be holding on to the Earth so it doesn’t get out of her control. We also looked at Lorenzo’s website to see him working on other sculpts. Son of Anthony Quinn – he definitely inherited his father’s artistic talent. The website is in this blog. As part of our New Year’s Celebration, we looked at M. C. Escher Fireworks lithograph from 1933. The famed Dutch graphic artist made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. Believe it or not, Escher was not incredibly popular during his life until very late. What a treasure he is. A master of form, shape, visual adventure, Escher has inspired artists ...

The Top of the Day is this astounding mural by Charles Alston from 1949 called Exploration and Colornization.
