More Sun and Moon Themed Art

Top of the Day is Georgia O'Keeffe's Pink Moon over Water from 1924. We're used to seeing her bold flowers & Southwestern settings; this is a Maine landscape from when she lived on the East Coast. A rich, beautiful vision, we got lost in her magical imagery. We loved the lively designs of fabric & fine artist Lois Mailou Jones whose seven decade career influences fashion design to this day with her vibrant prints. 

We immersed ourselves in the giant kinetic (not Kinnecticut, as I kept spoonerizing!) light & fabric sculpture of Janet Echelman. The Moon Flask Decorated with Insects Among Plants on a Chinese Meander Background from the latter 18th century made some of our gang bring their own straw! And finally, we looked at Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral's colorful Setting Sun. She's someone whose color & bold forms fit with today's bright offerings!

    Janet Echelman did a Ted Talk called Taking Imagination Seriously

    This Georgia O'Keeffe is breathtaking! A biopic called Georgia O'Keeffe about she and her husband Alfred Stieglitz starring Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons. You always have to take biopics with a grain of salt but it might open up interests in other parts of their lives that was poor touched on in this film. Hopefully, we will get to view some photos of Stieglitz and Nicolas Muray. So much to see!

    Lots of good stuff on the web about Janet Echelman’s creations- there is a permanent one between two buildings in Hollywood I want to see. Jerry, you were talking about the mylar strip installation that you saw (in St. Louis?) that reminded you of her installations.   Top of the Day is the Alexander McQueen & Damian Hirst Scarves collaboration, butterflies & skulls. Alexander was an avant-garde fashion designer & Damian an artist who pushes the boundary of what art can be. This collaboration is such a delicate beauty & so surprising if you know they work. Please check out the YouTube video below that shows the movement of the fabric on actual people! We saw Yves St. Laurent's tribute to Piet Mondrian's colorful forms & artwork from 1965. Mondrian's original painting and the inspiration for the dress is Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Grey and Blue from 1921 and is included in the links. Mondrian painted so many similar works, but this is the one that Yves St. Laurent said he used primarily.  Next we forayed into another Guerra de la Paz piece called Oasis. Bears, Cows & Manatees, Oh My!

Today was a celebration of Public Art in the form of the Buddy Bears, Cow Parade & Manatee Mailboxes because we needed some JOY!!!!  Carmen Miranda Manatee!
