FIREWORKS!

We began with a treat from one of our friends sharing her photos of a light show on the surface of the Frank Gehry Disney Concert Hall. We looked at the exterior of Gehry’s surreal silver building a few days ago and, luckily, one of our own took these wonderful pics. Beautiful site-specific color splashes on the curvy surfaces of the iconic building.

We switched up the art today by leaving Surrealism (for now) and looking at a plethora of fireworks!

Top of the Day is Bruce Seeds quilted mastery! Bruce breaks the traditional form of quilting with his brilliant, hexagonal fabric mosaics. This piece entitled, NLZ, looks like an explosion of flowers, holiday & religious iconography, color – a visual feast perfect to ring in the New Year! (NOTE: It's more 8ft by 8ft than 9x9 as I said!) His work & website got everyone excited with several people showing off their family quilts. What a lovely, lovely way to honor our Beloveds at this reflective time.

We also looked at Guerra de la Paz, Spring Sprang Sprung from 2009. This conceptual piece is a large tree composed of found used garments, steel hanging brackets and sound (bars.) Guerra de la Paz is the composite name of the creative team efforts of Cuban born artists, Alain Guerra & Neraldo de la Paz. Currently based in Miami, Florida, the duo have been working collaboratively since 1996 and use found objects (clothing, shoes, string, fabric) to create large-scale sculptures. We wondered how sturdy it is because a few of our gang want to climb & play on the limbs or kick(!) the tree roots! Hahah!

Ben Schonzeit’s artwork is so lavish and he works, expertly, in so many forms. We got to visit his painting: Fireworks from 2015. Some people saw fireworks through the flowers as if they were laying on the ground; others saw the flowers as the fireworks, or as if the blooms were falling from the sky after the explosion. One of our lot even brought her own (sun)flowers to our showing!

An untitled piece from painter & conceptual artist Jack Goldstein (1981) wonderfully confounded our brains. This acrylic on canvas astounded us! It looks so much like a photograph. If you get the chance, check out some of his other work – his technique is powerful. His ability to “create” light on the canvas, particularly, as someone today said on the dark black background, is delicately exquisite & equally eruptive. This painting looks like a light show or fireworks captured by a lens.

10:24:11 From Katje Lehrman to Everyone : If you use slow motion photography to capture the trail, the fireworks get shot into space and not all are shot directly upwards
10:30:10 From Kiki in Canada to Everyone : Beside a moon window :)
