Nonagenarian Harold Garde!
Diana introduced us to the fascinating Harold Garde, now 98, who has been painting since the 50s and still paints today.
Our Top of the Day is his unusually titled Growthing (Grow-Thing? Growth-ing?), a vibrant acrylic on canvas from 2006. We got so excited at Luba's suggestion, we turned it around to examine every aspect -- it becomes 4 paintings!
Here are the other "versions":
Here is another one we turned on its side to form a whole new painting
The original, entitled, Untitled (Puppets), 1993
With it on its side, it looks as if the woman is lying on a blue couch cradling the head of her (Frankenstein) boyfriend. Elaine thought the guy in the back with the potholder (fish puppet) must be getting the pizza out of the oven! Hahah! We had fun with Harold Garde's imaginative, evocative art!
Another of his works is Judgement from 1994 -- it sparked a great deal of discussion, who is judging whom? The "judge" or the statue head on a pedestal on the left, of the viewers on the right?
Love Potion, an intaglio etching from 1974, had us giving it the Third Eye!
This Untitled work from 1984 - 1985 also looked a little "judgy!"
Clearly we have to visit our new find, and Diana's suggestion again SOON!
