The GIFT of Architecture!

Two more Bernie art-pieces from our members: Michelangelo's God & Mittens and the potentially terrifying Bernie-pillar! (We named these in case you go searching! Hah!) 





We continued looking at whacky architecture. Today was actually a GIFT as Greg scrapped his whole shebang for the ones sent in by our wonderful members!!!  

Korean-born artist & architect Do Ho Suh's Fallen Star, a house that looks like it did indeed fall from the sky & land precariously on a building in San Diego mesmerized us! The friend who shared this with us has even toured the delicately poised building on top! Eeeeek!

One of our group drove into the street where the wonderfully-designed  Hobbit House in Culver City! What a surprise for her & a friend as this gem is just off a major thoroughfare in the heart of L.A. Built by Joseph Lawrence from over a period of 20 years from 1946 - 1970; it was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument in 1996 and is the first of many fantastical fairy-tale houses we'll see in future shows! (After a break -- more to come!)

The futurisitc-looking orrrrr Hippy-inspired Hubbell House is both home & studio for James Hubbell and his wife Anne. The mosaic artist & architect's wonderfully weird world looks like a set for Star Trek, as another guest pointed out. We also viewed many of James Hubbell's Peace Gardens, created by him & his students and assistants, which are placed all over the world. 

Hundertwasser!!!! Wowwwwww! Color! Form! Smashed together rooms, buildings, gardens! We got lost in the myriad of creations of this master artist. He also advocated for getting rid of modern toilets & letting mold grow all over the house! A true environmentalist! (DO NOT try that at home!) What a treat to discover his work. The many buildings of our Austrian-born madman is our Top of the Day!

Thanks to the pals who delighted us with these finds! One more house to start tomorrow then on to another adventure!

  Top of the Day is the Alexander McQueen & Damian Hirst Scarves collaboration, butterflies & skulls. Alexander was an avant-garde fashion designer & Damian an artist who pushes the boundary of what art can be. This collaboration is such a delicate beauty & so surprising if you know they work. Please check out the YouTube video below that shows the movement of the fabric on actual people! We saw Yves St. Laurent's tribute to Piet Mondrian's colorful forms & artwork from 1965. Mondrian's original painting and the inspiration for the dress is Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Grey and Blue from 1921 and is included in the links. Mondrian painted so many similar works, but this is the one that Yves St. Laurent said he used primarily.  Next we forayed into another Guerra de la Paz piece called Oasis. Today was a celebration of Public Art in the form of the Buddy Bears, Cow Parade & Manatee Mailboxes because we needed some JOY!!!!  Carmen Miranda Manatee!
